Whether you're a freshman or a transfer student, your first time on campus can often feel overwhelming. For introverts, it can be hard to find where you fit in. For extroverts, it can often be difficult to juggle so many activities. The workload doubles from high school to college, and trying to manage school, money, a social life, and getting a good night's sleep can be difficult. To ease yourself into such a big transition, here are some tips:
1. Find your spot.
Bookworm it up! Remember you're actually here to study! Look for a go to study spot. Try an empty classroom or the library. Power your phone down in order to limit distractions. It works even better if you set a schedule.
2. Don’t conform to the norm.
Just because everyone drinks, doesn't mean that you have to. Play a board game instead and save the calories for dessert! Stand by your values. It may appear that you seem a bit standoffish or have trouble acclimating, but you will find others who don't drink either, and at least you stayed true to yourself!
3. Transform your finances.
As a college student, you’re pretty much broke between the tuition, books, and not to mention social outings. It is important to keep track of spending. Try recording all your expenses in an Excel document and always review your receipts.
4. Failure is not an option.
Follow your passion. Anyone can succeed. It is a mere matter of diligence and effort. Reba McEntire puts it best “To succeed in life you need three things: a wishbone, backbone, and funny bone. Use them all."
5. Plot Goodness.
Kill people with kindness. Just like Gandhi, you too “can shake the world in a gentle way.” It does not necessarily need to be via conversation. In fact “At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.” Actions relive if a person truly cares.
