I thought high school course selection was frustrating. No matter what courses I wanted to take, they never seemed to fit seamlessly into my schedule. Yet, somehow it always worked out in the end.
That's light work compared to the registration troubles I've faced in college, however. As I was registering for classes for the coming fall semester, every twist and turn seemed to bring another complication.
The amount of emails I've sent this week begging professors to write me into their classes despite all the seats being filled has exceeded what I thought necessary.
The problem isn't lack of classes - in fact, there are SO many options for courses to take in college. Instead, the problem here was a combination of my late registration time and lack of availability of core requirements.
Each semester, there are a number of classes which all individuals in a particular year are aiming to take. I, unfortunately, had the last registration time possible this semester, so I was only able to register for these classes after nearly everyone else my age. By that time, nearly all of them were taken. My choices were very slim.
By the time it came for me to register, I had accepted my fate. I would be taking all electives and 8:30s and night classes in an attempt to somehow fill my schedule.
Although I definitely didn't get the classes I wanted, I didn't get a completely horrible schedule. I only have one class on Friday. I'm completing my Fine Arts requirement. I'm taking the next course necessary for my major.
I definitely had to settle for classes that wouldn't normally appeal to me, but now that I've had a little time to reflect I'm excited about the prospect. I'll get to try new things and be exposed to new ideas that are normally out of my comfort zone.
Although I'm not sure my lack of theatrical talent will help me in "Theories of Performance Studies" and my lack of math abilities will help me in Calculus, I'm certainly willing to try.
And that's what college is all about, right?
