A lot of hustle, stress and technology take up a typical person's daily routine. We are all always on the move. In the U.S., the expression “time is money” is followed by college students and working people alike. Slowing down and stopping to literally smell the roses would have a positive impact on a person's life.
There are so many special aspects that nature gifts us. Not just the aesthetics of the colorful flowers or the beautiful waters but the balanced and restorative energy nature provides. When we remove ourselves from technology, we realize how big and amazing the world is. Our problems seem small in comparison.
Kym Graham, a sophomore at Doane University, said she connects with nature through running and going on hikes.
“I like going into nature because it’s soothing and relaxing,” she said. “It helps you forget the world.”
Maggie Sedivy, sophomore, works for the groundskeeping department at Doane. She said she was outside a lot whenever she's at home. When working the grounds or just being outside, in general, it feels like home, she said.
It’s important to take a few moments out of our day, away from technology and work, to just observe what is around us. To be present and in the moment rather than in our heads. Being present reduces anxiety and depression. It can calm our thoughts and feelings. The article10 Of The Best Scientific Studies That Prove The Benefits Of Connecting With Nature, by Terri Onelove, discusses several ways that nature can help us prosper. The article said that being around nature can make a person more caring about others and think less about themselves. It can benefit a person's overall health and wellbeing. When walking to class, instead of looking at your phone, put it away and observe how the light looks through the trees or the way the sun is reflecting on the pond. Take some time to read on a park bench or shoot some photos of animals outside in their natural habitat.
I am just as guilty as everyone else of being glued to technology. I can scroll through Instagram for longer than I care to admit. But nature gives me something that my phone never can, which is the bliss of realizing the beauty of life.
So slow down, take a deep breath and observe what is around you. While connecting with nature you could end up connecting with yourself.
