When calling the idea of the butterfly effect into consideration, is it farfetched to imply the idea that every creature and being in our conceived world is playing God? If every being’s decision (or assumed personal discourse) causes a chain-reaction to occur, are they dictating or shaping the lives of everyone else, inadvertently or otherwise? The popular perceptions or beliefs that are attributed to God is that the omnipotent being sets in motion all the events that are to happen on earth, and has either set up a fate for its creatures or has bestowed on to them free-will, but intervenes in matters when its name is proclaimed. What drives people to worship such an idea, and to appease this assumed being, is to have control over their lives and in some cases, secure themselves in believing there is life after death for the absence of life is horrifying and inconceivable to some. Based on theories such as the butterfly effect, where every action directly influences proceeding actions, then a case can be made that we, in some shape or form, are gods.
Every decision is not clear-cut, for a decision is brought with more than one option. These decisions can be as trivial as walking up a flight of stairs instead of choosing to take the elevator, or as complex as deciding which major to pursue while in college. It is thought that one must be shrewd in their decision-making as it is imperative to choose the right option. This notion is very misguided as life is not an objective multiple choice test with one correct answer. Rather, it is more comparable to clump of molding-clay. Life and the reality that is made can be twisted, turned, and constructed in so many ways that the possibilities are infinite. It is why options appear during daily life, for a chance to curve reality in a certain way. Each possibility creates a different reality, it may or not be so different from the path the person chooses depending on the severity of the influences guided by the option, allowing an individual to continue life in a certain light. A notion comparable to the functioning’s of God.
Surely, one’s existence is part of the first decision or spark that created the universe. However, an individual’s existence, and continued existence is what contributes to the elongation of the reality. In the spirit of religious ideals, let us use the story of Jesus as an analogy for this conundrum. Jesus was born as what is believed to be the human incarnation of God, and was put on earth with a goal to sanctify humanity by eliminating the plague of original sin and opening the gate of heaven to all. Jesus’ birth was not sufficient enough, as he had to be sacrificed in order fulfill his destiny which came on Good Friday when he died on the cross. Jesus’ birth was not enough to start the reality of the decimation of original sin, but his death is what continued the goal of salvation. The big bang or the creation of the universe began life, but it could not be put into fruition unless the spawned beings carried out the theme of existence. Akin to the death of Jesus on the cross.
Every choice and possibility not followed establishes another choice for a different set life or reality. All realities exist, within the limitations of the person’s genetics, but are not put into fruition unless the influences of the universe push the person down that path. However, it is within these realities that life is created and other’s livelihood continues, which may allow one to believe that they have done an act that only God is assumed to achieve. Whether it makes life less meaningful (which it certainly establishes that all events considered are accidental) or bestows a sense of power, the significance of decision sets up a notion people have always dreamed of, that they are God.
