Welcome to the Real World

CONFINEMENT

The smooth wood tingled and pushed back as she attempted to open it with her fingertips, but nothing happened. Like a weak magnet, it actually moved toward her hand and wouldn’t let go. Suddenly, there was something strong wrapped around her wrist, but as she went to glance down at the sudden tenacious grip, she realized that not even her eyes could move. Her heart stopped from panic as it became apparent that her body became her prison.

She woke up in a dark and wet enclosure, very compact, but almost fit to her body like a bulging water balloon. This was a strange sensation but also comforting in a way. She stretched as far as she could to get a feel for her environment, but there was very little room to do so; however, the wall was elastic enough that a solid kick gave a little. This motion seemed to cause the environment to shake; whoever was holding her captive must not like the struggle.

Several months passed, and surprisingly, she became stronger. Movement seemed to come with more ease and the compartment was slightly larger too. Though this was becoming less comfortable, the walls were actually pushing on her shoulders for some reason, perhaps she too was growing. After what seemed like a lifetime, a hole below her, though small, opened, and she was being released to freedom.

This world was far different from what she was used to, she tried to speak to communicate with the other people, but nothing would come out that made sense to even her. This became very frustrating and all she could do was cry. Someone bathed and dressed her, which was okay, but the sense of something amiss grew as she realized everyone was huge in this world, and the people all passed her around with ease.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
