Being a waitress is not as easy as it may seem to be. Greet the customers, seat them. Ask for their drink order, take them drinks. Take appetizer orders, and pretend you can hear what the mother is saying over the yelling child. The process goes on and on and on, and sometimes, you just have to put on a smile and act like you are the happiest person around. Here are some of our favorite things and thoughts..
1. Knowing you should use the restroom before the rush crowd hits
2. Then, having three large, demanding tables be sat in your section, so you really will not be using the restroom anytime soon
3. When you try to introduce yourself, and are suddenly cutoff with their drink order
4. When a large party orders all together, and then at the end informs you they will all need their own ticket
5. When a table shows up right before closing time
6. Forgetting what a table asked you for when you go to put the order in
7. And then forgetting to mark their drinks before putting them on the tray
8. When you have multiple tables, but that one table just keeps wanting to talk regardless of your situation
9. Having large parties who get mad when their food doesn't all come out at the same time
10. Knowing your balance skills need to be on point while carrying all the expensive drinks
11. When silver needs to be rolled, but your wages are saying no
12. When you like one of your co-workers and you get to work together
13. When someone comes in on the weekend with a party of 10+ and wants a table but has no reservation..
14. When you have multiple tables, and that one says they are ready and then continues to debate on what they want
15. When rush hits, and there is no ice at the bar. or lemons.. or tea..
16. Going out in public and not wanting to talk to people because you're still aggravated from people you had to serve
17. When someone goes on and on about knowing the owner
18. When other servers are slow or have no tables and just sit around instead of helping to start close
19. When a table is doing every last thing to bug you, but you have to keep smiling
20. When your friends and family ask what time you are getting off so they can "make plans"
Being a server really does have its perks. You make connections with your regular customers. You get to learn about all different kinds of places and what people do for a living (if you work in a small restaurant such like I do) and if you're as lucky as I am, your wait staff and cook becomes your family. But when that nightly shift hits, so do all of these thoughts. :)
