Being short has always been a part of my life, and I've come to accept it. Unless I'm on someone's shoulders or a plane, I'll be seeing the world from 5 feet and under. Being short has its perks, as well as its downsides too. Before you ask, yes, people use me as an armrest, no, I do not need help reaching the top shelf, and the weather is absolutely splendid down here.
Through preschool and up to today in my junior year of high school, I've been shorter than all the other students. Sure, in kindergarten everyone was around the same height, but at some point, you'll stop growing. My growth rate was never the fastest, so I wasn't surprised when I was told that it was slowing down by the time I was 5 feet tall. We can't be skyscrapers with our heads above the trees, some of us were just meant to stay close to the ground and go about our day.
Personally, I don't mind being short. I find that it fits my personality and helps me create useful facades in certain situations. For starters, I can wear clothes in various sizes. All out of small/medium shirts? Go the next size available and you have a comfy over sized top. Need to borrow a friend's/significant other's jacket? Chances are it'll fit you. And once the colder months roll around, you'll be able to wear big, comfy sweaters while looking super cute.
But don't let short girls in cute outfits fool you; it's a universal law that short girls are sass masters with a cut throat attitude. Since being small isn't very intimidating, sarcasm usually does the trick. Any of my friends can tell you that I speak by shouting or talking enthusiastically and using copious amounts of sarcasm. But when we need to be sweet and kind, being short a few in height helps create that image.
Then there are a few negatives. There are always shelves that are too high to reach that one cup or crowds at big events that are too tall for you to look over. Other times people will assume you're 16 when you're really 21. And of course, it's hard to guarantee finding a popular pair of jeans that fit you without bunching up at the bottoms. And no matter what, there will always be that one person who makes short jokes, uses you as an armrest, or even crouches down to your level to talk to you.
In my opinion, there aren't as many negatives to being short as there are positives. I always overhear lots of people complaining about being short and how they'd rather be tall, but I wouldn't add another inch to height. I can't see myself being any taller than I already am, unless I'm rocking some gorgeous heels. Being a short girl is just one of the aspects that makes me, me. It can be aggravating at times, but it can be loads of fun too.
