Go friars!

As a student at Providence College for the past three (going on four) semesters, I've definitely become accustomed to how this campus works and I've learned all the ins and outs of it. Just like any other campus community, we have our own quirks and characteristics that are unique to us. If you're a friar like myself, you should definitely be able to relate to most, if not all, of these. Here a few confessions of a typical Providence College student.

1. You live for chicken nuggets and curly fries on Thursdays.

2. You feel like a mini celebrity whenever someone waves or says hi to you on campus.

3. You don't actually use the crosswalks to get from Harkins to Al-Mag.

4. If you don't have one already, you've always wanted an intramural championship t-shirt.

5. There are few things you hate more than the class registration and housing selection processes.

6. You love holding the door for others but never know what the appropriate distance is to do so.

7. You still wonder what happened to taco Tuesday at Ray and who complained that it was too repetitive.

8. You're actually afraid of the campus squirrels.

9. You love Coach Cooley.

10. You're probably involved in more sports, clubs, exec boards, or activities than you actually have time for.

11. The view of Harkins never ever ever ever gets old.

12. Whenever you're still hungry after a meal at Ray, you go back up to get just a plate of fries and then wonder if people are judging you as you walk back.

13. ...And the ice cream machine is both your best friend and your worst enemy.

14. Even though you don't think you're superstitious, you still avoid the circle in front of the chapel like it's the plague.

15. You really just attend 10:30pm mass because there are snacks afterwards and it's a social gathering that you can justify spending time at on a Sunday night.

16. Your printing money is gone in a blink of an eye.

17. Although Friar Dom creeps you out, you really love him at the same time.

18. You complain about how expensive Ben and Jerry's is at Alumni but then you buy it anyway.

19. You've mastered the art of budgeting friar bucks and ray swipes.

20. You actually really love playing bingo.

21. You still have a textbook on backorder at the bookstore that you ordered a month ago.

22. You've gone to Dunkin' multiple times in one day.

23. If you're not a business major, you're rethinking your major after seeing how nice the Ryan Center is.

24. You actually look forward to Ray brunch because it's the only meal you can rely on.

25. You've taken way too many pictures of the campus because it's just too beautiful not to.

26. You probably own a sweatshirt or t-shirt from every campus club or activity you belong to.

27. You wish Ruane wasn't so pretty because you love it but it also reminds you of Civ.

28. ...But at least Civ has made you better at Jeopardy than anyone else you know.

29. If you're not a science major, you have no idea how to navigate Al-Mag.

30. Although school can be stressful sometimes, you love being a part of the friar family more than anything else in the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
