The Things I Learn...

Confessions of A Grocery Store Worker
Ana Plumlee

Along with going to school this year, I took on a part time job at a grocery store nearby. I'm still trying to work out whether this job was a mistake or not. Because I'm working in retail, I'm getting a lot more stress in my life than college gives me. To make things worse, sometimes my boss doesn't exactly pay attention to my availability. But I have learned some great and not so great things from working at Giant Eagle...so here are my top picks:

1. Patience. Seems like the last thing I'd learn in an environment like that. But when you have a customer cussing you out over the phone because they couldn't get an order placed on time. Sometimes, all you can do is give them the number of a close store and get off the phone.

2. I can't do everything. There's only so much I can do, and at times, I have to admit it. Which is always hard.

3. I don't know everything. This is important, especially since customers come up to me and ask where things are all the time. I point them in the direction they should be going to the best of my ability.

4. I will not always like my coworkers. Enough said.

5. I will not always hate my coworkers. There will always be the coworkers I enjoy a closing shift with.

6. Closing shifts aren't that bad. In fact, they're a little fun. Especially since I can go home early after I'm done with my closing cleaning.

7. Parenting skills. There's something to be said for customers acting as if they are children at times.

8. Knowledge of how a company works. Seriously, the amount of times I've said "HR" in my life since I started working for Giant Eagle.

9. Unions. Yep. Had to join one, have to pay the dues. It benefits me in the long run.

10. I like sleeping. That's literally all I do on my off days if I'm not in class or doing something else.

11. The transfer process isn't as complicated as it seems. You want to transfer to another store? Fill out this form.

12. Sometimes, I really enjoy this job... I get to make some people happy. They have someone who will listen to them.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
