Thanksgiving has come and gone, which means it’s now officially time for Christmas music. Even though it isn’t even December yet, radios, TV commercials and stores everywhere are beginning to play Christmas carols non-stop and, as someone who hates Christmas music, it’s already getting on my nerves. When I was younger I never really had any strong feelings towards Christmas music, but the older I get the more I hate it. This may make me sound like a cynical Grinch, but I have my reasons.
1. They’re the same songs every year.
Every single year we hear the same few songs over and over again during the holidays. Sometimes they’ll mix it up and play an old song being covered by a modern artist, but everyone usually plays the same Christmas carols every year. After hearing them over and over again for about twenty years, the songs are starting to get old.
2. They’re a bit creepy.
While some songs are just innocent fun for kids, you have to admit, “Baby it’s Cold Outside” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” are pretty creepy. One had pretty infamous rape implications and the other is about some kid creepily watching his mom kiss someone who’s probably his dad dressed as Santa.
3. They’re either way too cheerful or way too depressing.
Songs like “Frosty the Snowman” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” are really upbeat and cheerful. Songs like “Silent Night” and “Mary did you Know?” are pretty depressing and there really isn’t much in between these two extremes. The mood of the music often quickly takes a complete one-eighty and it’s a bit much.
4. They are not honest.
Christmas carols are usually about the joys of the holiday. That’s great, but where are the Christmas songs about how stressful the holiday can be? That would be a Christmas song every adult could relate to.
5. There’s no escape.
Christmas music is absolutely everywhere. For those of us who hate it, part of the hatred comes from the fact that it’s impossible to get away from. Many stores and restaurants play it as background noise. It’s all over TV, radio and the Internet. Some people hum or sing it during their day to day activities, regardless of who they’re around. The only way to completely get away from it would be to sit in absolute silence and isolation somewhere.
