Madison Square Garden fills up with dedicated fans wearing ski masks, red beanies and well known music video attire for one sole purpose - Twenty One Pilots. This was the band's first of two sold out shows at the Garden as an end to their US leg of the Emotional Roadshow tour.
A white curtain drops revealing the iconic upside down microphone hanging from the ceiling as the duo (consisting of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun) dressed in red tuxes and ski masks, take the stage. The band opens with a mix of their songs "Fairly Local" and "Heavydirtysoul."
The band played not only crowd favorites such as "Holding On To You," "Ride" and "Stressed Out," they also played an 11 minute medley of songs from their first two albums "Regional at Best" and "Twenty One Pilots" as well as their newly released song from the "Suicide Squad" soundtrack, "Heathens."
Along with their own songs, the duo covered a few others with the help of their opening acts Mutemath and Chef's Special. They covered songs such as "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion, "Jump Around" by House of Pain, "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber and "Twist and Shout" by The Beatles.
Twenty One Pilots put on an extremely captivating show, with constant crowd interaction and an elaborate set and theatrics. Along with a second stage near the front of the house mixing area, they also had a drum island held up by the crowd, a large platform near the second stage, crowd stands and Tyler Joseph even crowd surfed in a human sized hamster ball.
Aside from being amazing performers, the band has an extremely dedicated fanbase. Also know as "The Clique," the fandom went as far as dressing in outfits based on the band's style/music videos and were constantly on their feet. Full of enthusiasm, the crowd thrived off of the band's energy. Lead singer Tyler Joseph really knows how to use the stage to his advantage and his contagious energy transmits into the audience. Always jumping around, Joseph ran from one side of the stage to another while jumping off of his piano and onto the drum set.
The Twenty One Pilots' concert was absolutely amazing. If you're every looking for a concert with an insane audience, killer vocals and entertaining theatrics, I definitely recommend getting a ticket to their show.
