When was the last time you were complimented? And I don’t mean a few empty words that are applicable to anyone; I’m talking about a compliment that was carefully constructed just for you. For me, two come to mind. The first is from a close friend of mine when he said, “You have a wonderful intuition and maturity which sets you apart not only from people your age, but from everyone.” The second is from my mom when she told me, “You lead with your heart, and it’s what makes you so special.” It's compliments such as these that define who I am and give me the confidence to pursue whatever I set my mind to.
Our society has become so focused on physical appearance that the majority of our compliments are based in that, so please don't let your only compliment to me be that I look pretty. I’ll smile and say thank you, considering I will find it flattering, but whether my outfit is well put together that day or not, my beauty is not the core of my identity. When I stop and think of the compliments I’ve been given in my life that have made an impact and stuck with me, they are the ones that are unique and original.
I encourage you to try exploring new ways to compliment your peers, and stray away from, “Your outfit is adorable,” and, “Wow you look so pretty today.” Next time you’re about to compliment a friend, try one of these (they are bound to make someone’s day brighter):
1. "Your laugh is contagious, and you light up every room you walk in."
2. "When I need advice, you are the first person I go to. Thank you for taking the time to listen to me."
3. "I’m proud of you."
4. "You bring out the best in people. Your energy is bright, beautiful and brings a smile to everyone's face."
5. "You always know how to find the silver lining. It’s refreshing."
6. "You inspire me, thank you for your constant support."
7. "Your potential is limitless."
Do you want to make someone’s day a whole lot better? It’s simple. Giving someone a positive, thoughtful compliment is a great, yet overlooked way to cheer someone up and send them off on the right foot. When you lift other's spirits up, it often leaves your spirits a little higher as well.
Give it a shot -- I can almost guarantee you won't be disappointed. Happy complimenting!
