Competition Season As Told By A Retired Competition Dancer

Because going to college means starting a new type of dance, one that doesn't involve rhinestoning and fake eyelashes.

Eugenia's Dance Studio Competition

Ever since I was 10 years old, my life revolved around dance competitions. When I wasn't at one, I was preparing for one and when I wasn't doing that (which was very rare), I was getting anxious and excited for the next one! I spent my days watching older girls take the lead and performing very well at many competitions, always hoping that would be me. I was blessed enough to be put with a group of hardworking and talented girls who helped not only push me to become a better dancer on my own, but also in group routines.

After countless competitions with both victories and let downs, it's hard to say I don't miss it greatly! I just started college this past fall, so this has been my first year not competing at a dance competition in about 8 years. As glad as I was and still am about growing in dance and going on to bigger and better things, it's hard to not be competing. After going to a competition for the first time this year without dancing, here are some of things I miss the most!

1. Wearing fake eyelashes for over 12 hours.

This is an accurate photo of how I would feel during awards every weekend after wearing fake eyelashes for so long.

2. Rhinestones EVERYWHERE.

From your hair, to your costumes, and even your face, rhinestones are everywhere on competition days! And trust me, E6000 won't be too far behind.

3. Pigging out after awards.

All of competition day, the most food they sell out competition is popcorn and maybe a candy bar, but there isn't even time to eat when you're running to do costume changes and also, supporting your teammates! So once that final award is given, everyones mind switches from dance to FOOD!

4. That feeling when your hair is basically being ripped out all day.

You have to switch to different hairstyles in less than 10 minutes while also changing your costume and trying to catch your breath. By the end of the day, if your hair doesn't look like this photo, you got lucky.

5. And when your hard work finally pays off.

When they announce the awards and you finally realize your hard work payed off is the best feeling, especially with your team!

I'll always miss that feeling of performing with a group of girls that I now call my sisters and I even miss those not so great moments. Competitions will never be the same for me since I'm not the one competing, but I will always love watching them!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
