Ah, you have landed a fancy internship (or job) in the city. You’re golden!! People warn you about commuting, but you shrug it off. “They’re just old and jaded,” you say or, “Maybe they’re just not city people,” as you convince yourself that nothing will get in the way of your storybook summer in the city. What could be better than working in a place with beautiful skyline views, Central Park and all that cool food you see on your Instagram feed? Manhattan is glorious, after all, right?
Soon, very soon, the city loses its wonder. Here's the process in a bunch of GIFs!
The first day.
Trains! People! Central Park! Times Square! Wall Street! Working! Opportunity!
Week two.
Amusement time is over.
Week four of your alarm going off at 5:15 a.m.
Taking your last breaths of fresh air before stepping onto the train and smelling wet garbage for the next 10 hours.
When someone sits next to you instead of in the many open seats around you.
Trying to read on the train.
When slow tourists get in the way of your walk to the train station.
When the trains are delayed at rush hour.
Looking around and wondering how all of the old men around you have done this for 30-plus years.
When they post your train’s track number.
When you miss the express train by two minutes and suddenly your commute just got 10 stops and 30 minutes longer.
When you finally make it home after a long day.
