10 Reasons Why You Should Live on Campus Your Freshman Year

As I was thinking about what I should write for my first article on the Odyssey, a thing came to mind.. I missed home, even though I live there 100% of the time.

I opted to live at home, in Bowling Green, Missouri, where I had lived since I was an infant, because I felt like I'd miss my parents too much.. I had been a home-body since I was a small child, never really wanted to do anything besides be at home with my parents.

Home is an hour and fifteen minutes away from Canton, Missouri, where Culver-Stockton College is located, the college I currently attend.

There are some reasons why I shouldn't have stayed living in Bowling Green..

1. I miss a lot of Cultural Events at college because of the distance I live from Culver.

2. I burn through about $40 in gas a week, driving a 150 mile round trip, which amounts to about $600 a 15-wk semester, or in our case, 12-wk and a 3-wk.

3. I won't be able to join a sorority, and get to do all of the get togethers and parties and fun that they have.

4. I have become an antisocial person, because of the fact I don't stay there and get to meet a lot of people at the Arts and Cultural Events.

5. I stay up late every single night because three nights a week, I get home at 7:30 or later. On Monday evenings, I get home around 8:30.

6. I never get to go to study sessions at 10 pm for my next test, because I'd have to come all the way back after getting an e-mail 2 hours before.

7. I got some of my scholarship money taken away, because they cater to the people living on campus first.. to the tune of $2500.

8. I have to wake up at 6 am for an 8 am class..

9. I spend all of my time studying for one of my majors, because, I struggle.. due to not being able to study at 10 pm in the Library with friends.. that I don't have.

10. Scheduling conflicts that I have, because I'm involved in a lot of things that I love, I cannot work, and can't work at 7:00 at night.

I'd suggest to anyone, please stay on campus, because I couldn't do it this first semester.. Give it a try.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
