I'm A Communication Major and No, I Didn't Choose It Because It's "Easy"

I chose to major in Communication as a way to promote, educate and inform on one thing that I am passionate about.

What is the one thing that most people spend the majority of their time doing? Communicating. We communicate with each other in a variety of ways. We communicate with each other by talking to one another, through body language, facial expressions, social media, texting, the list goes on. In today's society, the way that a topic is communicated can either make or break that topic. The topic could be talked about in either a positive or a negative way. Miscommunication is a common problem in today's society. Our beliefs and opinions often get in the way of the truth about a certain subject. As a communicator in our society, it is my job to communicate and educate the public with the truth about agriculture.

If you are majoring in Communication, you may find that people are constantly asking you,

"What does someone with a degree in Communication even do?"

As a Communication major, I find this to be a little frustrating sometimes. Another common frustration is when someone says something like,

"Oh, you're majoring in Communication, you must have pretty easy classes then."

Sure, my classes don't compare to the classes that a medical student takes, but just because I am not going to become a doctor does not mean that college is a breeze. Communication students still have to take the general courses that all other students have to take including math and science courses. Despite common belief, Communication majors don't have it as easy as some may think. Trust me, I don't spend hours studying for my upcoming exams just for the fun of it.

A Communication student needs to master skills such as public speaking, leadership and promotion strategies, just to name a few. A Communication student needs to know how to properly promote a certain subject through various medias which can include graphics, photography, writing, advertising, and videography, among others. Communication students need to know how to properly promote their topic despite the backlash they may receive from people's opinions. Communication students need to know how to properly inform the public about the truth, despite the opposing's beliefs or point of view. A Communication student learns all of these skills both inside the classroom as well as outside the classroom through experience.

I did not choose to major in Communication simply because I thought it would be easy. I chose my major based on my desire to promote certain subjects to the public in various ways, just as all the others majoring in Communication chose to do. I chose to major in Communication as a way to promote, educate and inform on one thing that I am passionate about- agriculture.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
