I'm A Communications Major And It's Not Easy

I don't know what the phospholipid bilayer model is, but I do know the Models of Communication.

I am a junior communications major and my focus is in public relations. I have been in this department since I began college as a freshman. I love being a communications major and the class styles are so different than just your average lecture.

I have heard countless amount of times people who are not communications majors complain about their class or classes and then following the complaints comes the ever so famous quote “I should just be a communications major.”

This drives me absolutely insane.

I did not choose to be a communications major because it was the easiest option. Quite frankly, it’s not. You can’t judge the whole department off of the public speaking gen-ed you were forced to take freshman or sophomore year because, well, everyone has to take it. Like most general education courses it’s not designed to be that difficult. But, when you get to the real meat of communications, our classes are hard. They involve so much more than just giving a speech and talking to each other. Just because we do not draw molecular structures does not make our classes any less difficult.

To me, communications is a science and an art. There is so much that goes into every aspect of the communications world that not everyone can just learn and be good at. It takes a special person to do what we do on a daily basis and to actually be successful. It is also such a broad world with amazing opportunities for any focus you choose. That’s also part of what makes us as communications majors so versatile.

I chose to be a communications major because I knew that’s where I could thrive and reach my fullest potential. I chose to be a communications major because it’s something I’m passionate about. I chose to be a communications major because, for me, I know that I will never feel like I am working a day in my life. I did not choose it to take the easy route.

Everyone is unique and everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Those are the things you choose your major on because that is what you want to do for the rest of your life. That is the exact reason why I’m not a nursing or business or nutrition or accounting major. Because I’m not good at it.

If your biochemistry classes aren’t working out for you either tough it out or maybe you should change your major. The communications department is always waiting with open arms, but do it because it’s a place where you see yourself and want to be, not because you think it’s your easiest option. I’m sorry you’re having a tough time right now, but don’t bring my major down to make yourself feel like you’re doing something greater than I am.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
