Going into college, you have always known a small classroom setting and getting one on one attention from your teachers. High school was actually a walk in the park compared to being at a big university. Currently, I am enrolled in an English class at a community college - a small college might I add - and it is crazy how you are not remembered as a person. The instructor of this class does not even remember my name; he calls me something totally different. Being so used to being remembered and known is hard compared to being just a school number. YES, when you start college, you are given a number. For example, mine is S00218285, meaning that when I need to set up an appointment with my adviser and or teachers, they ask for my student number first.
Getting to know your instructors is super important, simply because if you need help, especially if it is one on one attention, they need to know your name and your face. They also need to know that you are the person that does need help and you aren't messing around with it. Also, your instructors can write recommendations for scholarships, jobs, and internships. You need to build a foundation with your peers so you can have opportunities. College isn't entirely about learning; it is about building a foundation and meeting new people. You are your relationships; do not be afraid to raise your hand and ask for help or get someone's number and get help. These people could be the foundation for the rest of your life.
