One thing happening in today's current society is communication loss. This generation breathes on technology, and without it, mankind will struggle to advance, meaning they would potentially have to start back at square one. Despite that, this statement takes a giant leap in many directions. With this new technology comes new abilities and new things to handle, which can, of course, be a distraction from reality. This generation, though, takes technology distraction to a whole new level. There are more mobile devices in the entire world than there are people, meaning everyone on the planet could have a device designated to them, even the babies being born at this second. Technology has an enormous impact on today’s society, everywhere you go, there will be technology around. In schools, offices, stores, anywhere. Though this may seem like a good thing, it actually has more hurting qualities then benefiting.
Almost everyone has a device on them at all times, and the thing taking away our face to face contact are the new ways technology is presenting dialogue. Texting, calling and video chatting are just some of the many ways communication can be passed through. Today, people would rather send a text to someone about something rather than saying it to them in person. It is easier, less stressful and less thought about when in the process. This to some seems good, but it has a large negative effect. This can damage socializing and make it harder for people to cooperate and discuss things due to the anxiety of not knowing what to say or expect in response. On the other hand, when over a phone, people are basically shielded from that. Another negative effect of texting is miscommunication often had between receiving and sending messages. When talking to someone in person, you can see their expression, feel their mood and understand their tone when they speak with you. Over texting, you can only interpret what they are saying and how they are saying it, which more often than not, leads to false assumptions and unwelcome conflict. Losing conversation with another person may cause you to start losing communication with yourself. Meaning, the self-reflecting, thinking and coming up with a reason for something skills can diminish. Texting takes away those cooperative skills if used incorrectly.
In my opinion, communication over a device is ruining our society. Yes, I can be told Happy Birthday or Merry Christmas over a text, but it just seems kind of numb, not being able to hear the sincerity in their voice and read the expression on their face doesn’t really give the words their full meaning. Communication is what everyone goes off of, whether that is for a job, a game, a plan, a transaction, anything. If one thing is said wrong the situation as a whole could falter. You cannot take back a text, it will be saved there forever. Which is why it is so important to talk to someone face to face to actually know and get the full experience of what is going on and to have a real reply to something you have said.
Honesty in communication is what holds it together. Over a phone, you can stretch and manipulate whatever you say, and you won’t be affected by it much because you are halted by the screen and unable to see the reaction of what you’ve done to the other on their face. It is truly less painful when you are behind a screen. Technology can do many wonderful things, some things we humans may never be capable of. With the daily advancement of technology, those wonderful things will continue to happen, but there always will be a reaction to an action. When these new things come, new problems will follow. New conflicts, new resolutions and more excuses to cover up the truth. Texting is not technology as a whole, but communication can be. This decrease in it can ruin society and anything around it if not controlled.
