There are many misconceptions about sorority girls. The majority of media shows sorority girls as stuck-up girls who only care about partying every night. This, however, is not the case. This article is meant address these misconceptions and bring to light the reality of the real life of sorority girls.
1. Sorority girls party every night
When anyone thinks of a sorority, they think of girls in slutty costumes slamming drinks all night at frat parties. This is how media portrays a sorority. However, it is very rare to find a sorority girl who goes out every night to party. In fact, some sorority girls do not even drink or attend parties.
2. All sorority girls are rich
This is not the case at all. Sorority sisters must pay dues, and the majority live paycheck to paycheck in order to pay those dues.
3. Sorority life negatively affects a member's grades
This is something many people expect about sorority girls. It is actually the opposite. The majority of campus Greek life has higher GPAs than the rest of the campus. Sororities hold their members to a certain GPA requirement and, if that requirement is not met, that member is given mandatory study hours.
4. All sorority girls are stuck-up
Completely untrue. Sororities have been full of genuine, compassionate people who are willing to get to know you if given the chance.
5. Sorority life has no purpose
Sororities have many purposes both for the individual and the community surrounding it. I joined a sorority for the networking, the friends and the resume-building material. Also, all sororities have a cause they actively support and work to raise awareness about. This helps to give community service experience, as well as raise money for great causes.
6. Sorority life leaves no lasting positive outcome on the member's life
I am going into my sophomore year, and I can already tell my life has been positively impacted by my sorority. All of the women I have met who welcomed me into their lives and into a community made me feel welcome in a place where I knew no one. I know these friendships will last a lifetime and that I really have met my future bridesmaids.
