Adulting 101.
No one ever told me that adulting would be this hard. Like, how hard is it to take care of yourself and pull it together on a daily basis? Well, I have news for you: adulting is kicking my butt. If after graduating college, someone would have told me that adulting was 10 times harder then school. I would have been like, ha ha… no way. Oh boy, was I wrong...
There are so many things that they don’t teach you. There isn’t a book or set of secret tools that can fully prepare you for adulting. Now we are not talking adulting family style – it's adulting solo. Essentially, it’s no one but you. Being on your own can be scary and the little things that you use to think were minor are now real... and by real, I mean really real.
Panic attacks come on the regular, impromptu bills are like friends dropping in to say hi and sleep is off in the distant future. It's like it’s a whole new world that is ready to take you on a roller coaster ride. Now, don’t get me wrong, adulting is a good thing: it establishes that you can and will make it work to be successful, but it is stressful when the time comes. Decisions are at every doorstep and the ability to understand that this is all part of growing up is something many of us struggle and have to get used to.
The simple tasks of Lucky Charms vs. Cocoa Puff choices are over and it becomes decaf vs. caffeinated. (Quick tip, caffeinated always wins.) It’s the precious moments in life that you take for granted. You quickly realize all those years you complained and wished you were an adult have come back to bite you. Man, karma is a funny thing. It gives you perspective and appreciation for everyone who has had to adult around you. There is a newfound respect and level of understanding we have towards our parents. Like wow… how have you done this for 25 years? If anything, that should encourage us to do the same with a little time and patience.
So now that we’ve hit the adulting phase in our life it’s all about those 401Ks, social security, and health benefits. It’s a new day full of ups and downs and crazy obstacles but it’s all a part of life. So when I start to wish and want my childhood back, I have to stop and think. It’s all about life and the process we all encounter. So, maybe adulting isn't always so bad. It’s just a perspective and opportunity to change.
