Coming Home for the Holidays, As Told By Spongebob

"This Christmas feels like the very first Christmas to me..."

'Twas the last day of the semester,

and morale was low,

but as they handed in their last finals,

students could finally go.

All week long you stayed up late,

Never took a break and barely ate.

But in the end, it was worth all the pain

To finish that paper worth half your grade.

You spent hours in the library

Or the study rooms with a friend,

But you only distracted each other

And procrastinated to no end.

And what would finals week be

Without at least three tests?

But even after studying,

You spent the exam feeling stressed.

But you are finally done

Although your brain is fried,

and regardless of the grades you get

At least, you can say you tried.

You can clean out all of your folders

And have all your notebooks burned,

Because since you're done with testing

You can forget everything you've learned.

You clean up your dorm room

And bask in post-finals bliss,

but when your parents finally see you

They notice something's amiss

Your friends come to say goodbye

And you promise to keep in touch,

While other people that you've met

You don't think you'll miss too much.

When you finally reach your home

You notice all the Christmas lights,

But you head straight to the kitchen

And eat everything in sight.

Your pets and siblings greet you,

Your parents ask about the finals you've taken.

You think you did well, and you check your scores

Only to find out you were mistaken.

But there's no time for regret!

The holidays are here;

Time to fill that empty feeling

With some Christmas cheer.

You've been so distracted by your schoolwork,

Suddenly it's almost Christmas eve!

But you can get yourself in the spirit

By putting decorations on the tree

You reunite with your hometown friends

And share your college stories.

They laugh when they see what you wore

To an ugly sweater party.

The longer that you spend at home,

The more you miss your college fam;

But when you text this in the group chat

You're not sure they understand

Before you know it Christmas Eve is here,

And you head to the party your aunt's always thrown.

You spend the night eating and talking to cousins

As your grandma tells you how much you've grown.

When it's time to go home,

You tell the party goodnight,

And as you fall asleep in your own bed

You know you're spending Christmas right.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
