Coming Home for Winter Break

What I look forward to coming home for winter break

Coming Home for Winter Break

Finals week is quickly approaching and everyone is trying to get all their assignments done on time, but the one thing I have on my mind as this semester comes to a close is just being able to go home and see my family.

School becomes very stressful towards the end of the semester. Thanksgiving break is almost a tease because you finally get to go home and live your usual life before you came to school, but then quickly return to school and you have five assignments due on the same day or if you're lucky, within the same week.

When I go home for the holidays, or any other time we have a break, I fall right back into my routine as if I didn't even leave for the semester. Everything comes so second nature and it keeps me at ease while I'm home, but there are certain things that I like doing when I head home this holiday season.

1. Having MY room once again.

Of course, the room I have to myself on campus is very nice — especially since it has a full size bed. I like the bed, but I like my room back home even more. The easy access to the bathroom — having it to myself, isn't bad either. I just like being in my room; My room is my sanctum and I just feel more at ease with my physical self in the room I lived in majority of my life.

2. Free Wifi.

Of course the wifi at my house is amazing, and it doesn't crash on me when I'm doing assignments or watching something on Netflix — usually Family Guy. I try to avoid using the internet so much, so I can spend time with my family. But would YOU not use your laptop or other electronic device at your house when the wifi isn't awful? Plus, with the actual working wifi, I can catch up on all the anime I didn't get the chance to watch, besides YURI!!! On Ice.

3. Making daily food trips.

Here on campus, I do not have a car. So, when I want to go somewhere I usually have to rely on friend to take me somewhere, or I use the Zipcar they have here on campus, and sometimes that's a hassle. While I'm home, I can just hop in my mom's car and go to Chick-fil-A that's just a couple miles from home. Sometimes, I treat myself and go to Outback to get some delicious Aussie Cheese Fries. I can literally taste them now.

4. Being able to go on errands.

I was the child, and still am the child, who goes on errands with their parents. It's a nice way to get out of the house so I'm not stuck in my room all day, plus I'm usually of help when it comes to making dinner for the next few days or I happen to be home and I cannot go anywhere. Plus, how can you pass up a trip to the mall or the library when your car is sitting outside waiting for you to drive it?!

5. Being lazy.

The semester wears you out, and being able to come home and not do anything sounds really nice. Of course, there will be a chore or two that I'll have to do, but that beats doing a 10 page paper due in a week, doesn't it? It just feels so rewarding actually doing absolutely nothing.

As my first senior semester comes to a close, I really look forward to being at home and not doing everything for the next few weeks. I still have one more semester until I am completely finished with my undergraduate career.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
