You know that Frank Sinatra tune, “Chicago, Chicago, that’s my hometown” line that praises the city as an upbeat, swinging place to forget the blues. The Windy City is the best city in the world, and not just because the Cubs won the World Series—it’s a fantastic place to go during the winter break.
For one, you’ll never have to worry about missing out on a white Christmas. Chances are, you also had a white Thanksgiving…and probably will have a white New Years. If you want to see that winter wonderland with a blanket of snow and icicles, just hop on over to the Chicago area.
Next? The Kris Kringle market. It’s been the highlight of the holiday season since I was little. The rather large German market in the heart of downtown goes all out in employing rows of vendors to sell handmade goods, decorating a massive tree, and setting up its own Nativity scene that’s a favorite backdrop for family photos.
What’s better during the snowy, sub-zero temperatures of a Chicago winter than some hot food? Treat yourself to some famous deep-dish pizza or Italian beef to warm your belly! Think Giordano’s and Portillo’s—yum.
Chicago’s museums are some of the finest in the world, and when it’s cold outside, it’s the perfect distraction on break. No matter your interests, you’ll find the place for you: the Art Institute, Field Museum, and Museum of Science and Industry have ya covered!
Finally…the pride and joy of Chicago…the Sears Tower (known now as the Willis Tower…but let’s face it, to a true Chicagoan it’ll always belong to Sears). The line may be long, but the view from the top of the former tallest building in the world is worth it. You can take a walk out on the Sky Deck and hover over the city, or you can just gaze out the walls of windows to see as far as 50 miles! It makes you feel small, and reminds you just how big and bustling the city really is.
Whether it’s the reflective, looming glory of the Sears Tower, the easy access to top shopping and museums, or the lively, urban atmosphere, Chicago is not just a place, but an experience. During the holidays…there’s no place I’d rather be.
