Come Together

10

USAC elections are over. Let's drop the drama and come together.

Regardless of who you voted for, now is the time to voice your needs and concerns.

For the past few weeks, my life has been surrounded with campaign flyers, signboards and t-shirts supporting different campaign slates. Endless Facebook posts, tweets, and Instagram pictures were sent out. Who was endorsed and who wasn’t was the big campus drama and debates got pretty heated.  I got significantly less sleep than usual because of all the meetings and events. I loved every minute of it.

This was one of the most exciting, electric weeks at UCLA. You could feel the passions of the students coming through and my love of UCLA was revitalized. But now, the elections are finally over. I have my opinions on how things should’ve gone and you have yours, but that’s not what matters.

Shade was thrown, fights were had and tears were shed but, at this point, there’s nothing we can do to change the outcomes. No matter which slate you aligned with, we have elected a new council and they’re here to stay. So, now, instead of fighting over how things should’ve gone can we all just get along?

USAC will do all they can to bring this campus together and do what they believe is best, but it’ll be harder if we don’t come together. It’s much harder to lead a divided campus so let's look past the divides created by the various slates.

It was stated many times during the elections that slates only matter during election season. That time has passed. We need to remember that we are all Bruins. We need to be the best we can be. We must stand tall and stand together.

Although it is important to support our new council members, we still need to make our opinions heard. We cannot expect USAC to know exactly what we need at every moment. You have to tell them and communicate to be heard. No matter what your cause is, the USAC council is there to listen and help you. Tell them your concerns and ideas. If you don’t speak up, don’t expect them to be mind readers. Don’t complain that they aren’t listening.

Okay, now my rant is over. We can transition into a shameless plug.

If you want your voice to be heard, consider applying for a position on The Odyssey staff. We are accepting new interns and would love to hear your ideas for our paper and our school. An internship with The Odyssey will last through the summer months and into next year. The best part is that you can take advantage of this opportunity from anywhere with an Internet connection and some inspiration.

Just a few weeks to go, Bruins. So Let’s Act as Bruins United and get this campus Fired Up!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
