Colors: A Creative Critique On Society

A thought-provoking piece.

Why do some people judge people by their color as if one is worth less than the other, or one is superior? People judge people every day. Some don’t think twice about it. People judge without knowing their story and even when they don’t know the person’s life, or what situations they face. People judge others on their looks, clothing choices, age, skin color, sexual orientation, religious beliefs (or lack thereof), and many other factors that shouldn’t determine someone’s worth. Others judge and then feel guilty, but aren’t sure how to change. When will the human race take time to pause and realize that people judging people contradicts human life? When will people start to see the ways that they have wronged others, that every person is important?

How far will the hate escalate before people see the light, the root of their own evil actions and judgement? How many lives will be lost before we make the changes? But what are they?

Where will we go from here? Where will the change start?

Who will begin to be the change? Who will take the first step to a more equal future.

What will we do differently? Will we realize the errors of our way before it’s too late?

I say that it’s already too late. People should have acted differently minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, and even lives ago. But the past is the past. We can only hope to change the future. But hope doesn’t change anything. Actions do.

As a country, as a continent, as a planet filled with diversity and beautiful differences should want to see change in the world, It’s up to us. We must start somewhere, but where? Look at individual people. What do they love, and how beautiful is that love? Watch the way their eyes sparkle when they talk about something they love. Notice the passion they show when they play a song by their favorite band. Look at their dedication to helping others. Pay attention the happiness that a teenage girl feels when she dyes her hair a color other than her natural shade. Why should it matter to you what color another person's hair is? That's right, it shouldn't. No one bats an eye at greying hair of the elderly. Familiarize yourself with the joy that is spread in a place of worship, even if it is a different religion than our own. Worship is a beautiful thing. The emotions as a family is reunited with a loved one who has fought for his or her country and has returned home safely once again. See the beauty in the sacrifices, no matter how big or small.

People tell me that I have it easy because of the color of my skin. I reluctantly agree with them, but I didn’t choose to be born with privilege. Trying to make up for this, I always treat everyone equally. Character over color, I think. If you’re a good person, I will treat you as such. Maybe we should start noticing the things that should matter, like how they treat people. Are they kind to people they meet? I’m not perfect. I’m never guilt-free when it comes to being judgmental. I’m not trying to act like I am. But I do have an open mind. I stop myself when I am close to being judgmental of a person. I don't want to be the judge, I just want to share the love. I don’t judge someone for who they love, or try to force my beliefs on others. I’m saying that if people were a bit more compassionate, the world would be a better place. Love everyone, even you don’t like them. Be kind to all people you meet. Every life is important. People should love one another simply because we are all human. You don’t have to like everyone, but you should be kind. Be kind to everyone you meet. Possibly we can create change, just with love.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
