Should Colleges Have Classes On Good Friday?

My religious freedom isn't being put into consideration.

Should Colleges Have Classes On Good Friday?

This past weekend was Good Friday, and in case you were unaware, in the Christian religion Good Friday is to honor the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is celebrated annually on the Friday before Easter.

As a Christian, I feel my religious freedom is being taken away from me. My college doesn’t cancel all classes in commemoration of Good Friday, along with many other colleges in the United States. Our Spring Break was scheduled a week before the week of Easter, unlike other colleges. Why would we not get the week of Easter off of school instead so everyone could have been at home with their families? On Christmas, the birth of Jesus, we get an entire break from school (roughly four weeks). So, why on the day of his death, do we still have classes?

I was forced to miss the Maundy Thursday service my church holds every year because I couldn’t be home. A Maundy Thursday service is held in celebration of the Last Supper before the death of Jesus. All of the churches in my community come together for this service and it is unfortunate I couldn’t be there.

I missed out on communion, something that is important to the Christian religion and me. I feel like college is taking away my time to Celebrate Jesus, and these few days on the week of Easter are more important to me than other regular holiday. They hold true meaning for my family, my church, and me. I’m not asking for the entire week off, but I want to be able to honor my Savior for the sacrifices that he has made for me, but instead I was in classes all day.

For the out-of-state students or students with a large distance to travel, it’s difficult to get to go home for Easter, a national holiday. I wanted to spend as much time with my family as possible, but with classes on Friday it allowed less time to be spent with them. I have friends that live states away and weren’t able to visit their family on a holiday. If they would have had Good Friday off they could have gone home to see their families for Easter.

Easter is a big deal in my community. Every year my church holds an early morning breakfast to get together in a celebration preceding the service. Later, we always hold an Easter egg hunt for the entire community to partake in. Looking around over the weekend, it’s heart-wrenching that some of my peers were not able to be with their families and were stuck on campus. The campus tried to make up for this by hosting an “Easter dinner.” Sorry, but I wasn’t impressed. A themed dinner will not make up for them not being with their families last weekend.

“I am saying this for your benefit, not to place restrictions on you. I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible.” 1 Corinthians 7:35

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
