36 Things I've Done This Week INSTEAD Of Buying My Textbooks

Every college student knows this scenario: It's the first week of the semester and you have a huge list of books you need to go pick up for your classes, and you have $400 sitting in your account to buy books. You have 6 reading assignments due by the end of the week. But regardless of all of these facts, you still haven’t made it to the bookstore.

Here are 36 things I’ve done this week instead of buying my textbooks.

1. Complained about how many textbooks I have to buy this semester

2. Complained about how much assigned reading I have this semester

3. Complained about how packed the bookstore probably is

4. Made an Excel spreadsheet of my assigned reading for the semester

5. Search for my textbooks on Amazon to see if they’re cheaper

6. Wandered aimlessly around Target

7. Wandered aimlessly around Walmart

8. Wandered aimlessly around the thrift store

9. Wandered aimlessly around the music store

10. Got a manicure

11. Gone through my tweet drafts

12. Watched an episode of "House of Cards"

13. Packed for next weekend’s trip

14. Scrolled through Instagram

15. Scrolled through Facebook

16. Scrolled through Twitter

17. Scrolled through Pinterest

18. Caught up on emails

19. Checked Blackboard

20. Answered texts

21. Got fast food

22. Called my mom

23. Tried on clothes at TJ Maxx

24. Looked at Spring Break flights

25. Did a face mask

26. Practiced doing my makeup

26. Went grocery shopping

27. Went to the gym

28. Took a walk around campus

29. Bought another Comfort Colors shirt

30. Made coffee

31. Took a nap

32. Went for a drive

33. Color-coded my planner

34. Sold my textbooks from last semester

35. Caught up on "The Bachelor"

36. Wrote this Odyssey article

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

18. You won't like everyone, but you will find your best friends sooner or later.

19. You actually have to go to class.

20. Enjoy it, because you will be sad when it is all over.

Sometimes my brain just starts turning on an idea and it doesn't want to stop.

I don't know if it is related to my anxiety, perfectionism or depression. I don't know why it happens. It's frustrating, it's painful and it stops me from functioning.
