College is not something that can be studied. A high schooler can't quite understand college until they become college students. A little over a semester at college has obviously made me qualified to talk about the things about college that people/movies may not mention to high schoolers.
1. It's not that difficult to put in effort into your appearance.
Wearing pajamas to class is one of the most common college student cliches, but at Wofford, I don't see people showing up to class in their pajamas or even ratty sweats. Dressing down is more like oversized shirt and athletic shorts/leggings. Putting on cute workout gear isn't a difficult task in the mornings, and it makes you look like you have your life together enough to do things good for you, like exercise. Besides, the more you dress up, the more confident you will appear (and maybe feel).
2. You need someone to help you not eat your heart out all the time.
Yes, there are appropriate times to stuff your face-Finals week is always peak season for bottomless stomachs. However, eating your way through the semester isn't a good idea because that usually means you will have to spend money on clothes and feel sluggish. Don't even think about an unlimited meal plan if the temptation of food is too great.
3. Learn to live with no shame.
As someone with anxiety, even I can assure you that college makes it easy to be ridiculous, which means you do things you thought you would have never done. And you get to have a hell lot more fun when you're not concerned about being embarrassed.4. Hall rage doesn't happen(often).
For those of you who can't figure it out, here is the official definition of hall rage: the hallway equivalent of road rage. Dorman High School induced hall rage in me so many times a day. Like, at least once a class change. I'm not going to make the claim that you will never have hall rage in college, but at Wofford, I haven't had hall rage. That's one of the major reasons for me to have the #whywofford attitude.
5. Drama decreases.
Drama doesn't disappear. After all, college isn't so magical it can eliminate immaturity.Letting karma take care of people's wrongdoings is more common, though.
6. You have to find time to relax.
Time management is the key to success in college. Not brains, not bullshitting assignments well. Time management involves scheduling free time in between all of your assignments, classes, and commitments. Free time is therapeutic, so you have to have it.
7. You will care for others.
Hopefully, college is not the beginning of you caring about other people. In college, you will care about people in a different way since you live with them. At the very least, you won't want your roommate/hallmate/classmate to be slapped with an AV.8. Rules feel oppressive at times.
Spartanburg finally receives beautiful, powdery snow and we're not supposed to sled at Wofford? Safety yada yada people can be morons yada yada. I probably wouldn't have gone sledding anyway, but the freedom to have done so would have been nice, and I would have had the common sense to not injure myself. College tuition anywhere should cover lawsuits from students making unwise decisions.
Rules that abide by laws are nice, though.
