Growing up, we were constantly told by adults that we often took the things we had for granted. I never believed that then, but now as a college student on a budget, I am beginning to understand exactly what they meant. It is for this reason that I believe these are things every college student should be thankful and grateful for this Thanksgiving
1. Free Food
Not only will it be free food, but it will also be homemade food. As a typical college student, our favorite combination of words are free and food. If there is an event hosted on campus with those two words, you can be certain that attendees will magically appear. But imagine having the food you were raised eating, the good food, your deliciously tasting cultural food. Now imagine that but almost to an unlimited amount. When going home this Thanksgiving break, make sure to pack containers for the leftovers.
2. Our Hometown
It is always bittersweet to go back to. It brings back good and bad memories. Personally, when I go home I feel reconnected to my old self. I am able to laugh about the old times I had with loved ones. And even if you are not necessarily looking forward to seeing people, there is always a spot that you go to. It could be a restaurant, a hiking trail, a museum, or even a place with a view. I know where mine is, and I share it with very few people. So while you are back in town for Thanksgiving, remember to stop by that place, and reconnect with friends and family.
3. A Short Break From School

Midterms are starting to finish up, and in the midst of all that stress you will finally have some time to recharge for finals. Take some time to enjoy being stress-free, because when you get back to campus, you will more than likely have to start studying for finals if you have not done so yet (let’s be honest, the majority of us have not). Even if you are unfortunate enough to have work assigned over break, you should still really appreciate this time off, even if it is a couple of days.
4. You Get To Be Babied

I know I am an adult, but every now and then I miss the way my parents treated me before I moved out. But obviously I would not want that for a long time, so a few days should suffice.
5. You Get To See You're Pets Again!
You miss them and they miss you. Whether it's a puppy, a cat, a bird, or a rabbit, nothing compares to the excited look on your pets face when you finally come back home, especially if you've had them for multiple years.
This Thanksgiving there is a lot to be thankful for, like financial aid and opportunity, but these are the reasons I am excited to go back home. I will surely be thankful for these. I already am just thinking about it.
