Everyone thinks once you get to college, you will have ample time to sleep. You pick your own classes leaving time to sleep in. You have 5 hour breaks during the day, perfect chance to nap. But, it’s not as simple as it sounds. Sleep is hard to come by.
There are 4 key reasons we never get sleep as college students:
- The obvious sleep depriver is homework and studying. I could rephrase that to procrastination but let’s be fair because we all do the same thing. You get assigned a paper the first day of the semester and you start it at 6 pm the night before its due, then next thing you know its 3 am and you’re on your 5th cup of coffee.
- Your neighbors influence your sleep much more than you would’ve thought. Most of us known the walls of the dorms may as well just be sheets hanging up because that how clear you can hear through them. When it’s the past 12 and you’re curled up in your bed all ready to sleep thinking about the full 8 hours of sleep you’re going to get (more than you’ve got in the last two nights combined), you start to hear them. Sometimes my roommate and I even pretend were in the conversation.
- Another big issue with sleep is FOMO. The fear of missing out holds back many of us. When everyone is hanging out it’s hard to leave the fun just because you need a good night’s sleep.
- Your roommates nap schedules never align. When you finally crawl in your bed after a busy day of classes and you have 1 hour to nap before your next class, your roommate strolls in and wants to tell you about your day. One again, FOMO kicks in and you can’t sleep because you want to talk all about your day and you miss out on your 1 hour nap.
