School can really suck, can't it?
Walk through any university academic building and you will see half-awake students slugging through the halls while contemplating why they bothered to wake up for class.
Next, travel to the student union where you will find students standing impatiently in lines waiting to use their meal plan dollars in exchange for extra large cups of coffee. Cut them some slack, they are trying to stay awake during their next class.
The students are tired and school is hard. Between tests and research papers, labs and group projects, life as a student is not easy.
News flash: College is an absolute privilege.
It is truly unbelievable what little value college students put on their education. When papers are assigned it is unfair. When big tests are around the corner life is dreadful. Rather than viewing a college education as enriching and valuable training for the future, students view it as an obstacle standing in the way of what they want to be doing.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" -Nelson Mandela
As cliche as it sounds, a college education is invaluable.
If the world were 100 people, only 7 of those people would have a college education. Speaking of statistics, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 65.9 percent of American high school graduates in 2014 enrolled in college
A college education is not a right, it is a privilege; if you are lucky enough to have the privilege of higher education, it should be valued. Education is a tool that gives students the opportunity to be whatever they want to be.
Would you want to go to a surgeon for heart surgery if they were not first tested on the anatomy of the heart?
How is an accountant supposed to know how to handle a balance sheet if they did not sit through countless lectures and copy down pages of notes?
If college students would start viewing their education as a tool and a gateway rather than an obstacle, classrooms would become more engaging and minds would become more enriched.
It is not enough to mindlessly attend class and fill research papers with fluff in order to reach a word count. A college education is an absolute privilege and it should be valued rather than complained about.
"Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and diligence"
-Abigail Adams
