College Students, It's Ok To Have A Lazy Winter Break

We're exhausted, worn out, and fed up. We deserve it.

Winter. Break. Two words that probably appeal the most to a college student. After a semester of difficult and endless work, it's the one and only thing that we deserve. And for those of you who discourage us during our well deserved hiatus, hear me out.

College can be an extremely rough time for basically all students. Not only is it full of course work, jobs, and extra curricullars, but emotional turmoils as well. So not only are we under physical exhaustion, but emotional exhaustion, too. Take me, for example. At my university, we have a pretty long winter break. Depending on when finals end, I have about five weeks back at home. And what am I going to do for those five weeks? I'm going to relax because I deserve it. This semester was particularly rough for me, class-wise and emotionally. This winter break is probably the first chance I have since the semester started to actually take a day to myself, not leave my bed, and binge watch Gilmore Girls. And I am certain that others will want to do the same.

All I ask is that you please don't judge us based on this. Like I said, we are at a very tedious time in our lives and college can be a lot to handle. And does us binge-watching Netflix all day and ordering the occasional pizza bother you? No. And this does not mean, in any way, shape, or form, that you should compare us to yourselves. Yeah, you may have worked all day, but that doesn't mean I'm being unproductive. I still get stuff done over the break that needs to be done, I can be amazingly on top of it during the semester. I earn good grades, I work my a** off, and I'm constantly running around under stress. And frankly, if I am working hard enough when school is in session in order to achieve my goals in the future, then a five week lazy break is not going to hurt me. And nor is it any college student.

So let us be lazy, let us use our break how we want. There is no need to discourage us. Laziness is normal. As long as we work diligently and efficiently each semester, there is no harm done in spending a few days snuggled up in bed. We aren't rotten, spoiled brats, we are just tired, exhausted young adults who simply need to shut down from the world for a few days. And we are going to continue.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
