7 Trader Joe’s Essentials Any Self-Respecting College Kid Throws In Their Cart Every Single Trip

It's only about 10 minutes from campus, and the prices are very reasonable.

If you're like me and you live off-campus without a meal plan you're now faced with the task of buying your own groceries for the first time. It can be daunting walking into a grocery store knowing that what you buy is what you'll be eating for the next few weeks. So how do you avoid the junk food while eating food that keeps you full and energized?

My favorite place to shop is the Trader Joe's on Route 1. It's only about 10 minutes from campus, and the prices are very reasonable. I've found that there are certain products that I now buy every week which are without a doubt my Trader Joe's essentials!

1. Frozen Organic Brown Rice

This product is very convenient, and the box includes six servings. You don't have to worry about cooking the rice, just pop it in the microwave and add some chicken and veggies, and you have a healthy lunch or dinner!

2. ONE Birthday Cake Bars

These protein bars are so delicious and they only have 1g of sugar! I freeze them and eat them for breakfast when I'm rushing to get to class.

3. Trader Joe's San Soyaki Sauce

This sauce will make your healthy meal taste like your favorite Chinese takeout. It's great to drizzle over some chicken and broccoli which will make your dinner go from drab to delicious!

4. Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

Chips and dip is a great snack that takes almost no time at all to put together, and it can be healthy as long as you chose the right dip. Hummus is low in calories and very filling, so you know you won't get hungry later.

5. Salted Tortilla Chips

Trader Joe's tortilla chips are only 130 calories per serving, and you can dip them in hummus, salsa, or any other dip you like. However, it is very easy to eat too many in one sitting, so I recommend taking out one or two servings and keeping it in a separate bag.

6. Grilled Chicken Strips

This chicken is so easy to prepare, and it's a great way to add protein to your meal. You can heat it up in the microwave or sauté it with a vegetable!

7. Blood Orange Seltzer

Seltzer is an excellent alternative to soda, and this seltzer only has 15 calories per can. Trader Joe's also sells a Lemon and Ginger flavor and a Cranberry and Lime Juice flavor!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
