The other day I was walking to class when the bus pulled up to the stop just as I was walking by, so I got on and made it to class in half the time. I was SO excited that I didn't have to walk all the way to class. Then I started thinking about all of the little things that excite college students way more than you think they would. Here are some things that came to mind for me:

1. Taco Tuesday & Fried Chicken Wednesday

Don't get me wrong, I love tacos and fried chicken just as much as the next person, but it seems like EVERYONE on campus raids the dining hall for tacos and fried chicken. Good luck getting into the dining hall on Tuesday or Wednesday after you get out of class at 11:50.

2. Free t-shirts

To be honest, college students get excited about anything that's free. The incentive of free t-shirts is a surefire way to get us to come to any event.

3. Canceled classes

This pretty much goes without any explanation. Canceled classes mean more free time and more free time means more time to watch Netflix.

4. Inclement weather

Inclement weather = cancelled classes + an excuse to stay in bed all day.

5. Study guides

We all know study guides are our saviors. Without them, how the heck are we supposed to know what to expect on the exam??

6. Student discounts

Broke college students love student discounts. Whether it be at the movies, a restaurant, or a clothing store, I am always on the hunt for a student discount.

7. Available washers & dryers

You are extra lucky if there are any empty washer and dryer on a Sunday night in the dorm. I never expected to be excited about available washers and dryers but they're pretty necessary when my laundry hamper is overflowing.

8. Extra credit

I didn't realize the importance of extra credit until I came to college. Extra credit is EVERYTHING. It can easily be the difference between making a "B" and an "A".

9. Parking ticket WARNINGS

As someone who parks their car in the wrong lot a little too frequently, I am forever grateful when I'm given a warning instead of a ticket. What college student has the money to pay $20 parking tickets every week?

10. Clean bathrooms/showers

Monday mornings have actually become one of my favorite times of the week; that's when my hall's bathroom gets cleaned.

11. Free time

In high school, so what if you had time to lounge around your house or hang out with friends? That was normal. I'm not saying my schedule is 100% jam-packed all the time but free time doesn't come as freely as it used to.

12. Convenient bus arrivals

One of the best feelings is when I'm walking to class in the morning - lets imagine it's 40 degrees outside - and the bus rolls up just in time to drive me to class. Ahhh...the convenience.

13. Nice weather

Like I just mentioned, it's not exactly pleasant walking half a mile to class in the freezing cold or scorching heat. The best walks to class are on sunny and 75 degree days.

14. Holidays

Nothing beats us being able to go home for the holidays, spend time with our families, and temporarily forget about all our schoolwork.

15. Quizlet quizzes

What's better than Googling a homework question to find that ALL your homework questions are on Quizlet?

If you're a college student, I know that you can relate to the excitement of at least one of these things. Don't be ashamed. It's important to appreciate the little things in life!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
