Why Every College Student Should Have A Pet Fish

The past few months I've taken my little goldfish friends, Danny Rens and Jelly Gentile, for granted. Sitting at my desk, I love to watch their pudgy little bodies swim in circles, constantly discovering something new in their tank. Unfortunately, it took the death of Danny Rens for me to realize just how great it is to have fish in a college dorm. Here's four reasons why every college student should have a fish.

1. Great Distraction

We're all tired of staring at our phones for some sort of distraction, so having a fish is the perfect way to procrastinate on that paper that's due tomorrow!

2. Instant Friends

Fish won't talk back and they are great listeners. They also never sleep, so you will always have someone there for you... Even if it's a fish.

3. Therapeutic

Watching fish is proven to be beneficial for our mental well-being. With crammed schedules and all-nighters, taking a break to watch a fish swim around could really help!

4. Allowed Type of Pet

For us pet lovers, having our dogs and cats come to college with us would be a dream come true. Unfortunately, it's an unrealistic dream, so having a pet fish is second best. Plus, so many campuses allow up to a 10 gallon fish tank in the dorm rooms.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
