Being The College Student that Doesn't Drink

What's it like being a college kid who doesn't drink?

Your professor yet again makes the same remarks that many of your other professors have made in the past. It's always along the lines of "The classroom is empty today [it's a Friday] that's no surprise" or " I'm sure you would much rather be at a bar right now". Or we're learning about the agave plant, and we're supposed to know what's made out of it because we're oh so familiar with it--referring to tequila.

Being a college student who doesn't drink, it's rather tiring to hear these things. Other adults seem to assume that your drink just because your a college student. No I would not prefer to be at a bar right now. I am paying money to get an education to excel and earn a better future, and hope for a better tomorrow.

I guess I'm not your typical college student. I don't think drinking is fun. And if you're into drinking, that's your life. Who am I to judge? Shoot, just be safe. In writing this, I have no means in shaming the consumption of alcohol, because that's your choice. But as someone who doesn't drink, it sucks when you would like to do something, but you go to a college famed for it's parties and drinking. It sucks when other people put these preconceived labels on you before getting to know you. It sucks when people tell you, "I would ask you if you want to go out, but you don't drink so...". There's this supposed college student mold, and when you don't fit into it, it makes you feel crappy. You are seen as less, lame, or even boring--this sucks! Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out of college or my youth, but drinking isn't necessary in my life--and that's it. Being one of the selected few in college who doesn't drink is hard. Not because of peer pressure or anything, but because it's hard to find people who share your morals or people you simply click with, because it seems that many people's idea of fun is going out to drink at a bar. I mean, that's cool, but man, the world has so much more to offer.

Drinking is a choice. And my choice is to not do it. I get told that I'll change my mind later. Maybe I will--but I highly doubt it. I'm just not into it, and that's okay! No, nothing has happened. I just am not interested! I'm pretty sure lots of people who drink feel that when others say that they don't drink, that those people think of themselves as better, stuck up, or even saints. But I'm not. I'm just a human being who chooses not to drink a certain liquid--that's all there is to it. Tacos for life!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Being sick in college is really tough and definitely not a fun experience. Here are the 15 stages that everyone ends up going through when they are sick at college.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
