A Modern Day Love Story

Oh Amazon Prime, how I love you. Through the past months of college, I haven’t found anyone as reliable and forgiving as you - not even myself. If it weren’t for you, who knows where I would be?

Let’s begin at the beginning of the semester, when I received a textbook list for my classes that totaled to an amount nearing the cost of my tuition. My university’s bookstore was of no help: I spent almost two hours in line only to discover that even by renting my books, my bank account would still be far below the poverty line. To my delight, however, I was directed to you: where I found all of my textbooks and spared enough money to order myself cookies every weekend for the entire year to come.

I will never forget the time when I had the opportunity to receive extra credit in my entomology class if I came to lecture dressed as a bug. In a panic I searched all through the Internet in hopes of finding a pair of butterfly wings that would come in time for my Friday class without completely annihilating my bank account. I thought this feat was nearly impossible, but alas, you directed me to a perfect pair of blue butterfly wings that arrived precisely on time and scored me 10 extra credit points.

On one occurrence, I lost my computer charger after a rough week spent almost exclusively at the library. I delved through every drawer, dresser and crevice in my dorm room, only to curl into a ball on my floor in desperation over the thought that my laptop would die indefinitely. However, I was able to order myself an alternative through your app on my phone that arrived in two days and ultimately saved my life. A week after that (yesterday) I again lost said computer charger but not to worry, my new replacement is already on its way and will arrive tomorrow.

Let’s not forget the infinite amount of television shows and movies I have access to through you. If it were not for Amazon Prime, I would have no other way of watching Sex & The City for 13 hours straight on a Sunday, or watch the SpongeBob Movie in the place of studying.

So, Amazon Prime, I thank you. I thank you for being consistent, reliable and forgiving towards me during the time that is the most contrasting in my life. Through the classes, the crying and the dorm living you never cease to amaze me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
