You know...the most underrated yet dreaded part of the college process...finding a roommate. dun.dun.dun.
So, what do millennials do to find a roommate? Go to social media, of course! Going 'random' just is not good enough for 21st-century college kids.
The first step to finding a college roommate would be posting a cliche bio and five to 10 pictures on Facebook.
The bios are usually something like this:
Hey! My name is _____. I live in _____. I'm majoring in _____. I'm Hyped about (name of school).
I love _____, _____ and _____. (Usually tailgating, going to the beach, playing a sport etc.) I love to go out and have a good time but I'm always down for a night in just watching Netflix!
HMU if you're looking for a roommate!
*Snapchat name*
*Instagram name*
*Twitter name*
Pretty much all the bios are exactly the same in that format. BUT, the best part is the pictures! People obviously pick their absolute best model shots EVER. They flex their vacation pictures, senior portraits and any selfie that makes them look 110 percent on fleek.
Everyone tries to make it seem like they have the most interesting lives. At first, this can be very intimidating. Then, you must arrive at the realization that everyone's lives are just seemingly perfect. Social media makes it easy for people to distort their image.
So, why does someone’s trip to Bali make me want to be their roommate? Why does that girl’s fashion sense make her seem so interesting? One girl went to Coachella…I NEED to be her roommate!
You have to realize past vacations/parties/music festivals do not define what kind of person they actually are. Just because someone seems “cool” in their BEST pictures, does not mean they would actually be a good roommate.
So, while searching for a roommate on a college facebook group, BEWARE of the snakes.
Everyone basically posts the same thing, so make your post stand out. Look for the posts that go a little deeper beyond the generic criteria for a roommate. After all, you will have to live with this person for at least a year.
Moral of the story: do not be intimidated by college Facebook groups. Someone’s insane summer in New Zealand does not automatically make you guys compatible. It just makes you jealous. Avoid getting trapped in the scam. Do not get caught up in the epitome of basic-ness.
