Moving to college is full of fears and excitement as a new chapter in your life begins. There is so much unknown to explore and so much to discover. This is a chance for you to grow and learn about your calling in life. But first, you must meet your new roommate.
My roommate was not a random match, but we were strangers to one another so both of us had no clue what to expect within the next nine months in a shoebox-sized dorm room.
For me, Move-In Day was immensely stressful. On my way to university, I got a speeding ticket just outside of town (Watch out for those speed traps, y'all). Already overcome with nerves and now the weight of a ticket, I was a mess moving into my new home for the next 9 months. I walked through the musky halls of my dormitory and found my room. As soon as I walked in, my future roommate was full of smiles and happiness. Immediately some stress started to dissolve. My new roommate already presented high hopes for a fun new year.
Fast forward to living in a broom closet sized room together.
The two of us had to learn each other's patterns and how we complimented one another. We both knew what it was like to grow up with siblings and how to share a space, so we had little to no issues in that department. My roommate and I fell into a routine that benefitted both of us. I am a mixture of Type A and B (or as she says, Type A-); she, however, is fully Type B. Our two personalities began to create a perfect mixture like funfetti cake batter. We quickly became good friends. We took excursions of our new campus together after interesting dining hall meals, made movie nights a tradition, and explored the college town like tourists. We could talk for hours and share so much laughter. There would be nights we would stay up until the middle of the night talking about random things, and never running out of conversations until one of us fell asleep. She and I shared many of the same morals and interests in life. From chocolate, ice cream, and our immense sweet tooths to Jesus, late nights and musicals, Disney and ABBA, breakfast foods and a love for dogs; we became each other's new best friends in college. This time in our life was new and confusing as we left so much behind at home. However, we made our new living arrangements home.
Now don't get me wrong, we do have our disagreements. I believe coffee is the key to my success, she, however, can run on a 20-hour day with 4 hours of sleep and no coffee (HOW?!). Or the ever-on-going debate if pineapple goes on pizza (I vote yes!).
Once freshman year concluded, we had become the best of friends. So much so, that we still are roommates to this day and will be for the rest of college unless she decides she can no longer live with a coffee obsessed, pineapple pizza-eating girl. If she can handle me, then we'll have plenty more sleep-overs and late night ice cream chats to come!
My stranger of a roommate from the first day became my number one in college.
