A Thank You Letter To My College Roomies

College can go one or two ways: it can be a nightmare or a dream come true. For me, college is definitely a place I’d much rather be all thanks to the girls that make college feel like my home away from home. I can’t express how much I appreciate the friendship between all of us that will last a lifetime and the bond I have made with you girls.

To start off, thank you for helping me learn more about myself and who I am everyday. Throughout the crazy random dance parties that we have while listening to the ultimate middle school throwbacks (which occurs quite often), to being studious in the library, to super intense bonding talks in our beds about life... I have not only learned about you, but I have learned about myself. You have been there through it all. From screaming at the top of my lungs when getting a good grade or getting that text first from a crush, you have screamed in excitement with me. You have also been there to listen to me vent for hours about things that didn’t matter two days later, but you were there in a heartbeat, ready to listen.

Thank you for being brutally honest when I need you to be and always making sure I have an equal balance of good decisions—as well as bad ones—being made. By bad decisions, I mean staying out until the crack of dawn on a Saturday night knowing we have so much homework to do the next day, but always managing to get it done one way or another.

Thank for you confiding in me and letting me confide in you. Trust is something that doesn’t come easy, but I know I can easily tell you anything without being judged. You guys are the first people I go to text when something so pointless and stupid occurs during the day, but I know you’ll get a kick out of it and somehow find it funny.

Thank you for being there to listen to me cry about stupid boys and then being down to indulge in an $9 cup of fro-yo and not regretting a single scoop of it. Also, being there to eat Calio’s at 2:30 a.m. and then saying that our diet will start tomorrow… I guess that “tomorrow” hasn’t come quite yet.

Thank you for being the reason I have a countdown on my phone during winter break for coming back to school. I can’t sleep the night before, for I know the second I get out of my car, I will be smothered with hugs and an overall genuine feeling of excitement. I actually get pumped to drive seven hours to see you people—who would’ve thought?!

Lastly, thank you for becoming my other halves who I can count on for anything and everything at any time. When we graduate from college, I know I will look back on these years as the best years of my life due to these girls that started off simply as roommates and now are people I can’t go an hour without talking to. You guys are simply amazing and awesome in every aspect, and my life would not be nearly as interesting without you guys in it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
