A tenured professor at a local college is facing criticism for denying the validity of those who identify as alive.
"You literally have to die," my professor told me.
"But what if I want to live?"
"We all want things, Rachel." He grinned and ignored the hands in the class of people who identified as alive, and then called on Tupac for an question 'pac hadn't prepared to answer.
"Are you dead or are you alive?" The professor asked him.
"No?" Tupac responded.
The non-binary between the dead and the alive was just something that this professor couldn't understand. How could you be neither dead nor alive? How can you be in between, or both?
I had to explain to him that being dead is just like being alive. Your nails grow, you pass gas, the buzzards will come and eat you regardless of your level of aliveness. There is an incredible in between that lays in the realm of existing without necessarily trying or wanting to exist, but when one is dead, and really really dead, they will no longer be able to be considered as alive or else it would be detrimental to their memory.
The professor was asked by the media after his presentation on his neglect of the living whether or not he feels that now students will boycott his classes.
“I’m being required to swallow the presupposition that just because someone believes that if they would be [alive], that would improve their life,” he said.
"Sorry, there's just no evidence for that."
