College Parties Explained In The Viewpoint Of A Non-Partyer

College parties may not be your thing; it for sure isn't my thing.

Let's be real about this. Parties in college are the main thing that causes people to become off task with whatever they're pursuing in college. If you're not a major party-person in highschool, you might as well just don't force yourself onto it in college. First-hand experience right here. This is just everything that happened in one night, and didn't really bother editing it. This will just be the REAL rough first-hand report. No names or organizations will be used in this article.

I am currently a freshman attending University of California, Riverside; an EE major student, and 2016-2017 Residence Hall Senator. In high school, I was not the party type of person. When I arrived to UC Riverside, I thought that I'd give the party life a go. Didn't go exactly as planned. As a person who grew up in a strict Asian household, I was raised being told that drinking and smoking were bad and forbidden. Took that same mentality to college. I see all my friends drinking and smoking, even the close ones.

For most UCs, this is currently Week 1. The week when fraternities are rushing. I decided to attend a rush event myself, and when I got there, I see a bunch of alcohol drinks lined up, and people outside smoking. I told myself I was not going to drink that night. During the first hour of the two hours I stayed there, I drank one shot, and that was it. Then during the second hour, I see people all around me drinking and smoking and then the next thing I know, they're drunk and messed up, for lack of a better word. It especially hits you hard when you see someone you know around you dropping and the people who hang around them start to take advantage of them.

How it went down in my point of view was that as soon as the party "became lit," there were people playing Water Pong (water used as a substitute rather than beer), people outback smoking, and others mixing drinks together and taking shots. I was fine when other people who I am not familiar with took shots, smoked, or played. But it became all downhill when you see your close friends being pressured to take shots, and then some of them getting lit, and then some of them going against their will drinking more than they can take. Then the next thing you know, the cops are at the door because of a noise disturbance report.

At that point when the cops arrived at the house, I knew that it was time to leave and that parties are not suited to my life. All I did at the end was sit, chill, and watch the party happen at a distance. That was the first and last time I will be staying at a college party.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
