Fall is in the air. It’s that time of year again for all the great things that come with chilly weather -- Halloween, Thanksgiving, and, of course, College of Charleston’s Pep Supper! If you’re involved in Greek life on campus, chances are you know exactly all about the fundraiser and your organization has already started preparing. But, for those of you who do not know what it is, take the time to find out about the annual event and get involved to help out!
Every year, The College hosts and event where fraternities and sororities join together in a little friendly competition to raise money and canned goods for the Lowcountry Food Bank. There are three main components for the Pep Supper competition: banner, dance, and food drive. Each year, the College’s Panhellenic Board decides on a theme. Each individual organization is given a subcategory of that theme to which they construct their banner and dance. The theme for Pep Supper 2015 is Billboard Top 40 Hits. As you could have guessed, each fraternity and sorority was assigned a different year.
The race is on. Everyone is slowly raising forces in order to win the valued first place title. This year’s Pep Supper will be held on Nov. 6, 2015 in the TD Arena. Banners will be hung on the houses the week leading up to the big day. The actual event will begin with a volleyball game to celebrate College of Charleston’s athletics. After watching the game, the Greek life organizations will begin the dance portions of the competition. Once finished, the judges will tally the scores of the banner, dance and donations in order to determine a winner. But let’s not forget what the competition is really about -- raising the most money possible for a great cause.
The Lowcountry Food Bank a nonprofit organization whose mission is to end hunger in coastal South Carolina. The food bank is clearing house for donated food items. Wasted food products are collected and redistributed to a network of nearly 300 member agencies providing hunger-relief services through the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina. As a community, it is extremely important to give back to those in need. We must be grateful for all that we have and help others who have less. This is why the Lowcountry Food Bank is such a great opportunity for the college students to give back to the local community. It gives them a chance to truly make a different in others’ lives. Last year the Pep Supper event was able to fill the local food bank for an entire year. As a school community, we should put all of our efforts together in order to raise even more for the Lowcountry Foodank this year.
