College Move-In Season As Told By April Ludgate

It’s now August and we all know what that means: College Moving Season.

My sentiments exactly. It doesn’t matter where you go to school; if you only pack some of your stuff or if you pack everything you own; if you are going down the road, across the state or country -- moving is the absolute worse. It seems like we just moved all of our stuff out (because it basically was) and now we have to take the same stuff back to the same place.

For most every school in America we are less than 30 days to move-in weekend. Although the excitement to get back to campus and friends is unshakable -- thinking about moving again, is agonizing.

For freshmen, this might be the first time you have ever moved at all, so maybe you are feeling more of a panic than a dread. You will most likely have shopped and packed days, if not weeks, before and have gone over your list 10 times. Welcome to your first and certainly not last college move in.

By sophomore year, you are probably not as psychotically organized and most likely didn’t even start packing until the day before you were supposed to leave. Traditionally this is at least your third college move and you are less than enthusiastic. Your stuff is less carefully placed into boxes and shoved into your modes of transportation, already dreading having to unpack it all before you are even on the way.

Junior year rolls around and most students are excited to be out of the dorms finally and into apartments, houses or your Greek house. Some of you have already lived off-campus and some of you are still stuck in that dorm life. You may have some new excitement of having your own space and place, so maybe it doesn’t suck as much this year. But. It. Still. Sucks. At this point you might feel like you are being forced to do 20 of the same kind of math problem in a row. You got it down, and are sick of having to do it.

It’s senior year and your packing habits have totally changed in the last four years. You might be lucky enough to still be living in the house or apartment that you lived in the year before, so easy peasy. If not and you are moving once again, then most of your clothes will probably be shoved into trash bags the day you move and everything else randomly thrown in one bag to take with you. You may be ready to be back, but the thought of packing and unpacking in the matter of one day has you a little bit dead inside.

In preparation of it all, here are 12 tips for surviving this College Moving Season:

1. Start days or even weeks earlier and make a detailed list to minimize your stress.

2. Cry.

3. Drink lots of water. It is August and it will be incredibly hot, especially this year.

4. Feel dead inside.

5. Make a sick playlist to keep you going, it really does help your lack of motivation.

6. Punch yourself in the face until you are unconscious.

7. Get as many family members and friends to pitch in so it goes faster.

8. Break an appendage so you don’t have to do anything or at least as much.

9. Briefly plan out your moving day to maximize efficiency.

10. Drop out and run away forever.

11. Get a full night of sleep beforehand so you have plenty of energy!

12. Drink bleach.

Ya know? All viable and productive options for your move-in day this fall.

Despite all the stress and work that goes into getting packed and moved back to school, it’s worth it to get back your friends and your freedom.

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
