College Move-In Experience + TIPS

On Friday I moved into my freshman dorm room, and I will say it is perfect!! At the end I will add some pictures, but for now I just want to talk about my experience and give any tips that I may think of!

My move in time was 9:00 am, and like the excited freshman I am, I wanted to get there ahead of time. My family had planned to get to my school at 8:30 am, but we were running late and didn't get there until about 8:40 am. After waiting, I finally got the keys to my dorm. My roommate was already in our room with her family. The first thing we wanted to do was move our furniture around until it was satisfactory. We rearranged the furniture so many times. After about an hour and a half, we were ready to unpack everything.

This part was the most challenging because in such a small room with so many people, it takes time to give each other the space to unpack things. Luckily I had already pre-planned where I wanted to put everything. The first thing that I finished was my closet, which was the easiest thing to do for me since all of my hanging clothes were already in the order I wanted them and were on hangers. While I was doing this, I had my stepmom work on putting my clothes in the dresser.

Next we worked on all of my under bed storage, which was also relatively easy! Once I was completely finished with that, I started on my desk. I didn't get too far until it was time for lunch and errands. After taking the much needed break, I was ready finish my dorm! The only hard part about my desk was figuring out where I wanted to put things! Once my desk was finished, it was time to put up all my room decor. Again, my stepmom and I were tag-teaming this! It was so much easier when there were two of us working on it instead of just one. Finally after all of that was done, I finally got to make my bed. This was my favorite part of the day because it meant that I was done!

Overall, my experience was pretty good. I did not have any stress throughout the day, which was a really good thing! Since my dorm is not air conditioned, it was extremely hot. Besides that my day was really good!

Now for some tips that I used or I wish I would have used.

1. Plug in your fans first thing!

Believe me, it gets hot in the dorms.

2. Be open-minded

Not everything will go exactly how you've planned, and that's okay! You may have to improvise on some things, but everything will eventually work out! My roommate and I gave up a dresser to unbunk our beds, and we still have a ton of space!

3. Think about where you want everything beforehand!

I made some sketches of where I was going to put everything in my dorm, and it helped so much because I was able to relax more. It also helped for when my parents wanted to help me put things away.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
