Yeah. We have been looking forward to this day for years and years-especially after we finished our first semester of senior year. We have built this image of the typical Move-In Day. We want it to go our way, but sometimes it doesn't. Other times, it goes better than expected.
We've read those articles where people are upset to find the lack of room to hang their clothes or they're upset by their bathroom arrangements. Honestly, everyone has a different experience when they first arrive on campus. I happened to have moved onto the WPI campus today and some of my previous assumptions of Move-In Day have been shattered.
Here are the top 4 expectations freshmen have before they "experience" Move-In Day.
1.You'll feel excited to be on campus.
You probably thought you could adjust to college life within a few hours. Some of you may feel a bit scared and question why you picked the school. Others may feel comfortable immediately. That's completely normal. You may feel intimidated by the upperclassmen and feel completely lost.
It's just the first day of school and you may change your mind about how you feel within a few days.
2. FREEDOM AT LAST.
Saying goodbye to your parents is a large part of the college experience. Many of my friends found it difficult to leave their siblings, friends, and families. Others tend to substitute that feeling with more excitement and view living on campus as a visit to summer camp. With more freedom to manage and plan our lives, I guess we have to adapt to a new environment and learn to live apart from those who make us feel comfortable.
3. Buffet style food. Life is good.
The central dining hall may be loaded with all your favorite foods. While it's good to have options, you may have a hard time choosing what to eat when you visit your dining hall for the first time. You only have so much time to grab something to eat before moving on to the next activity.
Although it's great to have so much food readily available, the buffet style option opens the gateway to the "Freshmen 15." Yikes.
4. The real party starts after 2 A.M.
After day 1 of orientation, you will be tired. You've spent hours packing and unpacking your bags, arranging your room, touring campus, walking around to info sessions, meeting new people, and mustering up the courage to be confident. You may have even attended an optional freshmen socializing event that ended at 11:30.Your feet will be sore. You've been awake for over 24 hours and your head will be pounding.
It'll feel great jumping into bed before 12. It'll be fun.
