How College Is Making Me Be The Person I Want To Be

Being a freshman in college is a struggle because it is my first real taste of being an adult. Especially moving away from home. It never really occurred to me how easy I had it, until I had to save all my money, make “food" through only a microwave, and not have my parents or the same friends I've been with since I was 5. I realized I am on my own.

I remember my first day after moving in and thinking to myself, “I could be a whole new person." I was given the chance to grow, and I did! In just one year at Arizona State University, I feel as if I have experienced more successes and failures than I have in my entire life. And no, I'm not “a whole new person," but I am a better version of myself. I have come to know myself better as a person. Each failure I have experienced has lead me to realize my weaknesses and better understand my strengths.

Of course, I'm not always this positive although it may seem like it! Just like the rest of us, I am my worst critic. I'm ridiculously hard on myself, which is very unhealthy because it leads me to think I am never doing enough. But...I am! I am obviously not perfect, but neither is anyone else. We all have our own personal struggles, but I think what makes it easier is the moment you realize what didn't work and what will. How will you EVER grow as a person if you never experience a setback or two?

Another way that I've found myself thriving in college is by both the amazing organizations I'm apart of as well as the roles I hold in them. I've met so many inspirational people that have taught me more than I could ever learn on my own. In fact, I remember my dad telling me that I will meet some of the most amazing people in college, the kind of people who will have genuine, intelligent conversations with you.

He was exactly right. I have made friendships that will last forever, and I've met inspirational leaders who motivate me. I came to college getting nearly everything that I wanted out of it. Sure, some things might not have gone exactly as planned, but as long as I continue with the correct mindset and great aspirations, I think I'll continue to become the person I aspire to be. A loving daughter, a genuine friend, a supportive girlfriend, a hard-working student, an inspirational leader to others.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
