College Makes You Insane

College stresses everyone out at some point in their life. Whether it happens to be during finals week or the rest of the school year is up to you and your major. When the school year ends everyone seems to be just a little happier and carefree, nothing like they are during the school year; emotionally-scarred, sleep deprived and begging for less assignments due that week. College makes you crazy and I think it was structured that way.

I know that college makes you valuable to future employers and that it is a time in your life to figure out what you want, if you ignore the whole insanity thing. After four to six years of deadlines, papers and tests, you get a piece of paper and have to become an adult now. Who wants to become an adult after all of that hard work to do that?

Becoming an adult is scary. You have to pay for bills, have insurance and basically function as a normal person in society without the support your parents anymore, which is very frightening. No more sleeping in until noon and picking your classes to strategically allow for nap time or eating junk food for lunch. You have to get a full time job, pay rent and not have spring break and summers off (unless you work in the school system).

Being emotionally-scarred in college is a rite of passage. If nothing happens during your college career to make you this way then something is wrong. I’m less emotionally-scarred than others but, still need some help because the people in college can be cruel. They are just as freaked out as you are about entering the big bad world and they might take it out on you. It's definitely not okay to do but at least you might know why now.

Sleep deprivation, the bane of my existence. I work, am in a sorority and go to school full-time, if I get more than six hours of sleep a night then I'm lucky! I can and will nap anywhere I can lay my head down. I can nap in the hallways waiting for class, the library taking a break from studying or even in my car waiting for my next class. Sleep deprivation is a sign of insanity and I’m pretty sure many college students feel this especially because finals are in a couple of weeks. Eeek!

It can’t just be me that assignments seem to be multiplying the closer we get to the end of the semester, can it? In the last week I have done at least three papers, two presentations and three tests. I thought the closer it got to May, the less assignments that we would have to do, nope I was most definitely wrong. I kind of have this master list in my head that says how many assignments I have to finish before the end of the semester and I can’t see the end in sight yet.

College is supposed to make you crazy, it is preparing you for adult life. It will make you emotionally scarred, sleep deprived and the assignments seem never-ending but, you’re only here for four to six years and you are only a college student once in your life and you might as well enjoy the insanity for a little while. College breaks are a good way to take away from the craziness that is the assignments and tests. If it weren’t for the breaks I wouldn’t be fit to color in-between the lines at a mental facility. Don’t worry, school is almost out for the summer and you can just relax by the pool and recover from your temporary insanity. Can someone please pass the blue crayon?

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
