If College Majors Were Hogwarts Class Subjects

Depending on which Muggle college you choose, all of these majors will vary from program to program.

Have you ever wondered what your wizard (in-hiding) friend would possibly choose for a major in Muggle College after graduating from Hogwarts? Or what your favorite class would have been had you gone to Hogwarts before heading off to college?

Well, look no further! This is a list of the common Hogwarts classes (and more) matched with just some of the many majors offered in colleges fit for Muggles.

That way, for all the witches and wizards reading, if you are just graduating Hogwarts and looking for the right major, you would likely find your perfect match here! Take note that while most of the classes taught in Hogwarts are on this list, some classes, like Astronomy, Art, and Music, are left off because their college major equivalents bear those very titles (luckily enough!)

1. Applied Mathematics – Charms

Okay, this one might be a stretch, comparing magical charms to mathematical equations, but the ways in which these two are treated and executed are very similar to one another: though Muggles at first believe that mathematics has little to no use outside the classroom as soon as they graduate from high school, the Applied Mathematics major is living proof that it can extend to various areas, especially those that make up the rest of the STEM spectrum.

Charms, I believe, is treated in the same way that although wizards think little of it (at least, at first,) they will come to realize that there is more to its practice than originally perceived…

2. Athletic Training/Self-Defense – Flying/Defense Against the Dark Arts

Training for a sport and training to fly on a broom are one in the same, since learning how to operate a broomstick is essential to learning how to perform on one in a Quidditch match, which is very similar to learning how to play a game in whichever sport you may choose! However, if you choose not to play a sport, it is essential that you at least take some sort of training in the Athletic department’s specialized area of Self-Defense, its lessons all too similar to the lessons taught in Defense against the Dark Arts, because no matter what, there will be moments when you have to protect yourself, so you need to be prepared for them.

3. Biology/Environmental Studies – Herbology

To me, Herbology seems like a toss-up between the study of living things and the study of the conditions with which these organisms have to live. Trust me: it would be impossible to think of either major of study without the other when it comes to Herbology.

4. Chemistry – Potions

Simple enough in that either way, you get to work with different ingredients and/or chemicals to create new compounds!

5. Engineering – Transfiguration

An Engineering major I am not, but a quick Google search briefly described Engineering as the combination of the main STEM areas to invent, design, create structures, and so on. So, it would involve a transformation of some kind. And what Hogwarts class involves literally changing form? Transfiguration, of course!

6. Linguistics – Study of Ancient Runes

I also had to look up Runes, which I first thought to be part of a mountainous landscape (I thought this was Geology for sure,) but Runes are actually letters of a set alphabet of related Germanic languages before Latin came into the mix, so I was somewhat close. This would translate into the Linguistics major, in which you get to explore what the mechanics of language and even languages that have died out over time, including written ones like the runic languages. There is also another choice on this list that would further peak your interest if you happen to be interested in learning Linguistics…

7. Health Science/Pre-Med – Divination

I know: I couldn’t believe it either, even after I came up with it! Divination put me in a tough spot because I thought that it was that one Hogwarts subject which can only mean that you either had to have the ability to see into the future or you don’t! However, I came to realize that Health Science (or Pre-Med, depending) acts very similarly on this highly-raised bar: it takes a great deal of practice to master as well as patience throughout, you certainly have to know what you’re doing, and when done the right way, it can save lives. To think, I always underestimated Divination…

8. History – History of Magic

Very self-explanatory. Why learn just one of these, a magical history versus a Muggle history, when you can learn both?

9. Mathematics/Linguistics – Arithmancy

Now, I kind of knew that Arithmancy had something to do with math, but I wasn’t exactly sure what, considering that there are a few math-integrated majors out of there (including Applied Math, of course.) So, this required me to do another quick Google search, and I found that it was putting mathematical symbols in place of words or phrases in code format. So, not only am I convinced that Arithmancy would carry over as Mathematics, but the subject is quite literally mathematical translation into its own language, so Linguistics would be another good choice for the loyal Arithmancy fan!

10. Nursing – Care of Magical Creatures

Seems obvious, right? Nursing human beings and nursing magical creatures are pretty much the same thing! The one thing I can say for sure is that for either one, you have to have the bedside manner of a saint, especially for those hippogriffs!

11. Philosophy/Religious Studies – Alchemy

Like I discussed in my earlier points on Study of Ancient Runes and Arithmancy, I had to do some digging on Google about Alchemy, but this time around, I was completely thrown off with what the subject actually entails: I thought that Alchemy would be in some ways similar to Chemistry, mostly due to how both words sound alike, but no, it is purifying certain objects as part of a philosophical tradition. Purifying, as in the religious sense, and philosophical tradition, as in being self-explanatory… Need I say more?

12. Psychology – Magical Theory

Since History of Magic deals with understanding how magic came to be and its impact on the wizarding world leading up to this point, I believe that Magical Theory deals with understanding how to handle such a power and how to use that power properly to create a better wizarding world, and that is where Psychology steps in on the Muggles’ side of things.

For us Muggles, History is mostly focused on past events caused by the people before us, but Psychology, on the other hand, helps us understand exactly what likely made them tick or behave in the way that they did, and it would help us relate a little bit better to our everyday lives.

13. ______ Studies – Ancient/Ghoul/Muggle Studies

Fill in the blank with whatever you like. Just so you know, this blank is open to far more than just Ghouls, Muggles, and anything Ancient! Whether it be Africana, American, Marine, Sustainability, Women and Gender, and even Interdisciplinary if you can’t decide on a single one, they are all cultures and demographic backgrounds that are worth learning about in the largest extent that is in the form of a college major.

Depending on which Muggle college you choose, all of these majors will vary from program to program, so contact any of your Muggle friends for help in learning more about and ultimately deciding which one to pick!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
